When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in early 2020, I was forced to stay at home for a long time, suffocated by the compression of space and the concrete sense of time. While everyone began to maintain social distance, I wanted to escape home, break the distance, and get in touch with people in reality. I started to explore the mostly unknown private spaces of strangers. A tacit understanding between my subjects and me was, ‘When I give you a sense of security you need to keep me safe’. The project mainly discusses “body &identity” and “private information & private space”.

At the end of April, I flew to Chengdu to interview my good friend Li Aixiao. She shared her understanding of art creation and her views on performance art as a young artist. There is no tradition of the nude in Chinese art. Confucian values did not include the human body. In the west, traditions pull in two directions: the idealised nudes of ancient Greece were the embodiment of civic pride, while in the Judeo-Christian tradition the naked body was associated with the sinfulness of sexual immorality. In contrast, the principal focus of Confucian ethics concerns the proper forms of human conduct and relationship. There is little emphasis on physicality or how one looks, but much on how one behaves. Upon humaneness, restraint, loyalty, and filial piety in the pursuit of social harmony. Compared to these high ideals, imagery of the naked body was simply considered vulgar.

As humans, our first encounter is with ourselves. Regardless of the happy or sad events we experience in our social existence, they get accumulated, transformed, and internalized in our personal life emotions. These emotions then manifest themselves in the external signs of our physical life. Li Aixiao's "If Sisyphus Was in 2022" (2022) presented at the 10th UP-ON International Live Art Festival is an excellent example of this phenomenon.
